A Strange New Beauty (Troy Brauntuch)
In A Strange New Beauty, American artist Troy Brauntuch remediates archive images from Nazi Germany in order to show how archival material that is historically sensitive can create new meanings and impacts in modern political and social contexts. Material for A Strange New Beauty comes from the Great German Art Exhibitions (Große Deutsche Kunstausstellungen [GDK]) organized by the Nazi regime from 1937-1944. In his work, Brauntuch mixes the original images with newspaper and other images in a process that has been described as “anti-archiving”.
Until March 2020, the work is at the Petzel Gallery in New York City’s upper east side, where you can find more information if you are interested.
